This is a Japanese Type 26 revolver chambered in 9mm Nambu. It comes with an original Japanese Type 26 leather holster, Serial Number 50957. The Type 26 was Japan’s first domestically produced modern handgun, manufactured from 1893 until approximately 1923, with additional revolvers being assembled from left over parts and arsenal reworks after 1923. They were still in service in WWII, a testament to the robustness of the design. This example is in extremely nice condition, which is rare with Type 26s due to their long service life and the number of wars in which they served. Only 60,000 were made and not many survived.
The revolver is in very good condition. The metal retains a very high percentage of arsenal blue with fire blue remaining on the hammer, hinge pin, and trigger and some straw on some of the internal parts. There are two assembly numbers on the pistol, indicating it was probably arsenal reworked at some point, which is the norm for these. The numbered parts all match one or the other assembly number. Arsenal reworked Type 26s usually have a dull rust blue on all the parts, so it is uncommon to have one such as this with so much fire blue and straw remaining.
The bore and chambers are excellent, with the bore having mirror shine and sharp rifling. There is pitting on the barrel, both sides. Mechanics are excellent with the cylinder locking up tightly with the trigger pulled and hammer down.
The grips are the later serrated style. Given they are matching by assembly number, it is safe to say they were installed during rearsenal. They are in excellent condition with some minor dings and marks.
Finding a Type 26 rig in this condition is very difficult. This will make a centerpiece addition to your collection.
