US ARMY DRIVER TAB DRIVER-A
The US Army Driver Tab Driver-A is a prestigious insignia representing the Driver-A qualification. This badge is a testament to the high skill level required for operating or repairing military motor vehicles, and it is a part of the U.S. Army’s Driver and Mechanic Badge program.
The Driver and Mechanic Badge, often referred to as the “Driver Tab,” was established in July 1942, initially named the Motor Vehicle Badge. It was later renamed during the Korean War to its current title. This badge is awarded to U.S. Army personnel who meet stringent qualification standards, showcasing their expertise in military vehicle operations and maintenance.
For drivers, the requirements include completing military vehicle operations and maintenance training, serving as a driver or assistant driver for at least 12 consecutive months (or 8,000 miles) without accidents or traffic violations, or serving as a qualified driver instructor or examiner for a year. Mechanics must pass aptitude tests, achieve a skilled rating in mechanics, and fulfill driving requirements if operating vehicles in their role. Special equipment operators must complete 12 months or 500 hours of operation without accidents or reprimands.
The badge features metal bars that denote the type of qualification, such as DRIVER: A (amphibious), M (motorcycle), T (tracked), W (wheeled), MECHANIC (automotive/allied vehicles), and OPERATOR-S (special mechanical equipment). From 1962 to 1966, aviation mechanics and crew chiefs wore a modified version with a propeller bar, which was later replaced by the Army Aviation Badge.
This badge is worn suspended beneath standard decorations, positioned to the wearer’s right (or left in some configurations), with precedence higher than Identification Badges but lower than Aviation Badges. The U.S. Army Driver Tab remains a permanent award, symbolizing sustained skill in military vehicle operations and maintenance.
