Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) Insignia

The Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) insignia is a prestigious emblem for enlisted members of the United States Navy. This insignia symbolizes a sailor’s proficiency and dedication to surface warfare operations, reflecting a higher level of professional qualification.

Key Features:

  • Authorized for wear by enlisted Navy personnel permanently stationed aboard a Navy afloat command.
  • Signifies completion of the Enlisted Surface Warfare Qualification Program and Personal Qualification Standards (PQS).
  • Essential for advancement to E-6 (Petty Officer 1st Class) for those in the E-5 paygrade (Petty Officer 2nd Class).
  • Introduced in 1978 with the approval of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Thomas Hayward.
  • Silver cutlass design, first available in April 1979.

The ESWS program was developed to recognize the expertise of enlisted sailors in surface warfare. It requires a commitment to mastering various skills and knowledge areas beyond the standard professional criteria. The qualification is voluntary and attainable by all “surface” ratings, ensuring it is a realistic goal for dedicated personnel serving on ships and afloat staffs. The program is designed to be manageable without imposing an administrative burden on the ship, with well-defined and specific qualification criteria.

To earn the ESWS insignia, sailors must:

  • Be a petty officer with 24 months of service on a surface ship.
  • Achieve performance and leadership marks in the top 30% for Chief Petty Officers and 3.4 for Petty Officers.
  • Complete the PQS for damage control, damage control petty officer, repair party leader, and work center supervisor.
  • Qualify in all watch stations for their rating and pay grade.
  • Successfully pass an oral board conducted by the commanding officer, executive officer, or lieutenant commander.
  • Receive a recommendation from the chain of command and approval from the commanding officer.

The ESWS insignia is not only a mark of personal achievement but also a testament to a sailor’s dedication to their role in the Navy’s surface warfare operations. This badge can be obtained anytime after reporting to a ship, providing a continuous opportunity for professional growth and recognition.
