The WWII U.S. Army Air Forces Shoe Insert, Flying, Electric, Type Q-1 was an integral component of the aircrew’s electrically heated flying suit system. Constructed from heavy olive-drab canvas with built-in wiring, they were designed to be worn over leather shoes or inside leather and sheepskin flying boots, such as the A-6 or A-6A models. The inserts worked in conjunction with electrically heated trousers and F-2 or F-3 flying suits, ensuring pilots remained warm in the extreme cold of high-altitude operations.
