US Army Driver Tab – DRIVER-T for Tracked Vehicles

The US Army Driver Tab, specifically the DRIVER-T, is a distinguished insignia awarded to personnel demonstrating exceptional skill in operating tracked military vehicles. This badge is part of the Driver and Mechanic Badge series, symbolizing expertise and dedication in vehicle operation and maintenance within the U.S. Army.

Key Features

  • Authentic Insignia: Represents proficiency in operating tracked vehicles.
  • Historical Significance: Originated in 1942, evolving through military history.
  • Recognized Skill: Awarded for meeting rigorous qualification standards.
  • Military Heritage: Reflects commitment to excellence in vehicle operation.

The Driver and Mechanic Badge, often referred to as the “Driver Tab,” has a rich history dating back to its creation in July 1942 under the name Motor Vehicle Badge, as per War Department Circular 248. It was renamed during the Korean War to its current title. This badge is not just a mark of honor but a testament to the skill and dedication required to operate and maintain military vehicles effectively.

The badge is awarded to drivers and mechanics who meet strict eligibility criteria. For drivers, this includes completing military vehicle operations and maintenance training, serving as a driver or assistant driver for at least 12 consecutive months (or covering 8,000 miles) without accidents or traffic violations, or serving as a qualified driver instructor or examiner for a year. Mechanics must pass aptitude tests, achieve a skilled rating in mechanics, be assigned to primary mechanic duty, and meet driving requirements if operating vehicles in their role. Special equipment operators must complete 12 months or 500 hours of operation without accidents or reprimands.

Compatibility and Use: This tab is specifically designed for those operating tracked vehicles, making it an essential insignia for U.S. Army personnel specializing in this area.
