Description

Vietnam Service Medal (VSM)

The Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) is a distinguished recognition awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who served in Vietnam and its contiguous waters or airspace from July 3, 1965, to March 28, 1973. This prestigious medal also honors those who served in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, or their airspace during the same period, provided they supported operations in Vietnam.

Key Features

  • Eligibility for U.S. Armed Forces members serving in Vietnam or its contiguous regions.
  • Recognizes service in direct support of military operations.
  • Available to personnel on temporary duty in Vietnam for specified durations.
  • Option to receive the VSM instead of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM) under certain conditions.
  • Distinctive design symbolizing honor and service.

The Vietnam Service Medal is a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who served in the Vietnam War. To qualify, service members must meet specific criteria, such as being attached to or serving with an organization participating in military operations for at least one day, or serving aboard a U.S. naval vessel directly supporting operations. Additionally, participation in aerial flights into Vietnam’s airspace or serving on temporary duty for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days qualifies individuals for this honor. The medal cannot be awarded more than once to the same individual.

Service members who previously received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM) for service in Vietnam between July 1, 1958, and July 3, 1965, may opt to receive the VSM instead, with the AFEM being removed from their records. Similarly, those who participated in Operation Frequent Wind in April 1975 can choose the VSM over the AFEM. However, no individual is eligible to receive both medals for the same service period in Vietnam.

Compatibility and Use

The Vietnam Service Medal is an essential addition to the collection of any veteran who served in the Vietnam War. It serves as a lasting symbol of their service and dedication. This medal is suitable for display, ceremonial wear, or as a meaningful gift to honor a veteran’s commitment and sacrifice.
